Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry

History of the Department

The Department of Physical Chemistry was opened in 1977. Academician Ye.A. Buketov, the first rector of Karaganda State University, was the first head of the department.

Dean of the Chemical Faculty Omarov R.G. and E.A.Buketov¢s students from the Chemical and Metallurgical Institute Valikhanova N.Kh., Zhambekov M.I., Kozorin L.G., Egorova I.V., Novik S.N., Kalanova Sh. M. were the first staff of the department. Masalimov A.S., Nurgaliev B.Z., Zhumadilov E.K. went to work at the department a little later, after defending their Ph.D. theses in Moscow. Makarov G.V. continued to work at the department at the end of «Algeria» contract.

They were opened оn the basis of the Physical Chemistry Department:

  • Problem scientific research laboratory «Chemistry and technology of chalcogenes and chalcogenides» (1981) ;
  • Department of Colloid Chemistry and Ecology (1982, head of the department professor Zhuravlev V.P.);
  • Department of Electrochemistry (1983, head of the department professor Zhurinov M.Zh..);
  • The second in the Soviet Union (the first was in Leningrad) Department of Quantum Chemistry (1984, head of the department professor Minaev B.F.);

In 1995 departments of Physical and Quantum Chemistry was again merged under the leadership of doctor of chemical sciences, professor Masalimov A.S. as a result of optimization of the structure of higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan.

In 1997, the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry was formed as a result of association of Quantum, Physical and Analytical Chemistry departments. Minaev B.F., Makarov G.V., Sharipov M.Sh., Masalimov A.S., Beznosyuk S.A., Irgibaeva I.S., Amerkhanova Sh.K., Nikolsky S.N. defended their doctoral dissertations during the existence of the department. More than forty people defended their PhD theses, including active teachers of the department: Khalitova A.I., Abulyaisova L.K., Nikolsky S.N., Buketova A.E., Kobzev G.I., Zhumabekova M.B., Pustolaikina I.A., Kurmanova A.F. and etc. It should be noted that a significant part of theses was defended in large centers of science and education (Lomonosov Moscow State University, A.N.Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds, N.D.Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry).

Academicians E.A.Buketov, Z.M.Muldahmetov, professors V.G.Shkodin, M.Z.Ugorets, M.Sh.Sharipov, A.D.Kagarlitsky was the head of the department since its foundation. At present,  A.S.Masalimov,  Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Academician of International Higher Education Academy of Sciences and National Higher Education Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, is the head of the department

International Cooperation

The problem of creating of effective mechanisms for international interuniversity partnership is very relevant for universities at the present stage of Kazakhstan’s development. Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry actively develops international cooperation. Tasks of the department in this area are:

Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry has wide creative connections with foreign  Universities and Research Institutes. Among them Norfolk State University (Norfolk, Virginia, USA), Institute of Inorganic Chemistry named after A.V. Nikolaev SB RAS (Novosibirsk, Russia), Institute of Organoelement Compounds named after A.N. Nesmeyanov (Moscow, Russia), Barnaul State University (Barnaul, Russia). Thus, there is an opportunity for joint training of PhD doctors with a specialization in department scientific areas.

Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry implements an educational process by credit technology corresponding to world standards.  students by this technology makes it possible for graduates of the university to be competitive in the world community. Graduates get  the opportunity to be competitive in the global community through the use of this educational technology. Scientific Directions

Systematic studies in various areas of modern fundamental chemistry, related to the problems of the electronic structure and reactivity of matter, by technologies of molecular spectroscopy, computer and quantum chemistry, as well as classical physicochemical and analytical instrumental methods are conducted by the department members.

Scientific research is carried out in accordance with the Prospective Plan of Research of the Karaganda  State University named after E.A.Buketov and on with the grant themes financed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan:

Dynamic EPR spectroscopy and quantum chemistry of kinetics and mechanisms of fast protolytic reactions in liquid phase

In theoretical studies conducted by A.S.Masalimov, a new alternative approach to the consideration of the protolytic reaction mechanism is being developed, in which the primacy of electron transfer in the elementary act of most chemical reactions is postulated. Such interpretation of the protolytic reactions mechanism based on the basis of numerous experimental data obtained in recent years in the EPR spectroscopy laboratory of the KSU named after E.A.Buketov. This concept is based on well-known ideas of V.V.Voevodsky and M.I.Usanovich. It allows us to formulate a single and holistic approach to the interpretation of the intermolecular chemical interactions mechanisms, based on theoretical concepts of oxidation-reduction processes. It should be noted that similar works abroad are not available. In the Republic of Kazakhstan  and CIS countries this kind of work is carried out only in the Karaganda State University named after E.A. Buketov.

For the last 6 years in the United States, similar views on the mechanism of proton transfer are developed by R. Kucker et al in the theory of РСЕТ (proton-coupled electron transfer) based on the works of the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry R.Marcus. The model of synchronous electron-proton motion in corresponding acid-base systems develops in these papers. Cooperation with the EPR Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Institute of Organoelement Compounds named after A.N.Nesmeyanov (Moscow, Russia), Professor S.P. Solodovnikov, as well as with the Laboratory of Chemical Radiospectroscopy of the Institute of Chemical Physics named after N.N. Semenov (Moscow, Russia) is currently being implemented. Theoretical and experimental research of the electronic structure and reactivity of many organic compounds, which have a natural origin and exhibiting biological activity, is the goal of these scientific studies. In particular, the establishment of the acid-base reactions mechanism in the medium of various solvents and in water, is expected as a result of these studies. The role of reactions in aqueous solutions is extremely important for understanding the nature of many biochemical processes.

Electronic spectroscopy of complexation processes of transition metals with organic ligands in water-organic solvents

Electron spectroscopy methods have been long and successfully used in analytical chemistry. Spectrophotometric methods, due the simplicity of equipment and their implementation, are available and the most often employed in the practice of chemical laboratories. This method is convenient not only for studying equilibrium in solutions, but also for solving of a wide profile practical problems and it finds application in the study of various objects of environment.

The study of some transition elements complexation with class of β-diketones (acetylacetone) and flavonoids (quercetin, rutin) reagents in aqueous-organic media is conducted at the Physical and Analytical Chemistry Department of the Karaganda State University named after E.A.Buketov for several years. The interaction of a number of transition elements (copper, nickel, vanadium, zirconium, titanium, rhenium, molybdenum, etc.) with these reagents in water-ethanol solutions was studied. Optimum conditions for complexation were found, spectral characteristics of formed complexes were determined, their composition was determined, and the stability constants were calculated. The structure of the resulting complex compounds is proposed based on obtained results analysis. Methods of computer chemistry were used to confirm the obtained data.

Methods for determining a number of elements using these reagents, both in solutions of their pure salts and in the presence of interfering components, were developed on the basis of studies. The proposed methods were used to analyze specific objects (catalysts, standard samples, superconducting alloys, coal, ash and others).

In addition, studies of mixed (different metal) complexes, as well as work in the field of kinetic methods of analysis are conducted at the department.

Ab initio research of physicochemical regularities in the formation of mesomorphic properties of liquid crystal compounds

Interest in the study of mesomorphic (liquid-crystalline) compounds is explained by the wide spread of mesophases in nature, their biological role and the rapidly growing range of practical applications of substances in such states.  Liquid crystals, which are today the most common technological variety, are among the mesophase. However, creation of scientific and theoretical foundations for mesomorphic properties of liquid crystals formation is lagging behind, despite significant progress in the development of  LCD displays, heat-resistant LCD panels, etc.  This constrains the development of technologies for obtaining liquid crystal materials in turn.

Studies conducted under the leadership of Abuliaisova LK are a logical continuation and development of her earlier work in the field of quantum chemistry of mesomorphic compounds. In the 1990s, phenylpropargyl esters of a number of phenols that exhibited liquid crystal properties were first obtained by a group of synthetics led by prof. Schelkunov A.V. Synthesized compounds included mono- and di- substituted para-, ortho- compounds. Results of establishing the intervals of nematic mesophase existence contained paradoxical facts. It was necessary to use a new approach to explain them. Studies on the conformational analysis of mesogenic ethers by quantum chemistry methods were initiated to explain and scientifically substantiate experimental facts. It was assumed that preferential conformations of compounds play an important role in the formation of the physical properties of liquid crystals. Some progress has been made in this direction: stable conformations for isolated molecules and molecular pairs of compounds have been predicted, correlation between calculated values and substitution constants has been found, potential functions and surfaces of potential rotation energy have been constructed, and the values of internal rotation barriers have been estimated. Later, the range of mesomorphic compounds studied was expanded, the arsenal of quantum-chemical methods used was enhanced by the use of high-precision ab initio and density functional theory methods. Results of research are published in journals approved by the Committee for Control in Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in rating journals with non-zero impact factors and are presented at conferences in Republic of Kazakhstan and abroad (Russia, Germany, Great Britain, USA).

Educational Work

Educational work, which is aimed at creating a balanced, creative and highly moral person, capable to operate successfully in a competitive environment, which has a high culture and civil responsibility, devoted to his homeland, conducted with students at the Department during extra-curricular time. Educational work is realized through the following directions: patriotic education; intellectual development; moral education; physical and psychological development; multicultural development; development of leadership qualities; artistic and aesthetic development; propagation of a healthy lifestyle, development of research and creative potential of students, prevention of religious extremism, prevention of crime, drug addiction, educational work in the dormitory.

Student participation in international conferences, symposia, summits is provided to develop skills in cross-cultural communication, global thinking and tolerance. A strong leader, a confident personality with an active civil position, ready to contribute to the socio-economic development of his country is formed as a result.

Educational work includes the work of curators, participation in university student events, city and regional public events, organization of extracurricular leisure of students. Teachers and students of the department are organizers and active participants of cultural and sports events. Curator¢s hours to discuss the Message of the Head of State held in student academic groups. Annual Message of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev define principles and specific ways of development of our country for the next year.

Days of the Department are organized in the dormitory №5 traditionally every year. In November 2016 a meeting with students of chemical faculty, dedicated to scientific and pedagogical activity of the outstanding chemistry-physicist scientist of the RK, rector of the KSU named after E.A.
